Kilimanjaro Marathon & Tanzania Wildlife Safari

Situated south of the equator, in Tanzania, at 5 895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world. An icon in Africa and across the globe, “Kili“ as she is affectionately known, is one of the sights every person should see at least once in his or her life. Every year, in the beginning of March, a standard 42.2 km marathon is held in the town of Moshi in northeastern Tanzania, in the shadow of this geological masterpiece. The route passes through many smallholding farms, villages, parts of town, banana and coffee plantations and patches of forest, providing great excitement to the residents who give ample vocal support. A marathon in this dramatic setting, catering for amateurs above all else, is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity!

When it comes to the classic African safari experience, Tanzania’s stunning range of wildlife and its many parks and conservation areas make it one of the best places to go on safari. Two wonderful parks to the west of Kilimanjaro can be incorporated into your  Kilimanjaro Marathon Travel Eventing itinerary. No safari to Tanzania would be complete without visiting its two crown jewels: Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. The Serengeti is one of the world’s most famous wilderness areas, playing host to the famous wildebeest migration for much of the year. Descending to the floor of Ngorongoro Crater is every bit as iconic as a game drive out on the plains of the Serengeti.
